Expert summary
Russia is the world's largest country and a major player in international politics. Founded in the 12th century the country gradually emerged from Mongol domination and extended its borders from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean. The country flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries but the next century met with decline. This decline culminated in 1917 with Lenin and the Bolshevik Party seizing control from the Tsar and eventually forming the communist USSR in 1922. After many decades the USSR collapsed and was formally dissolved in 1991. Russia was then marginalized economically and politically in the 1990s but the country has reemerged as a major world player in the 21st century under the rule of Vladimir Putin.
